scene with kind eyes

11/21/2022

This morning, I flipped to a page
in a Coleman Barks translation of Rumi:

The Prophet said, "There are some who see me
by the same light in which I am seeing them.
Our natures are one.

        Without reference to any strands
of lineage, without reference to texts or tradition
we drink the life-water together."

It made my heart erupt again to read this.
You dance inside my chest, so conscious of

how the light that We see
or maybe
when the light that sees Us

be and being seen with kind eyes means
so much, relieves and repairs so much.
For years I have been dreaming, scheming,
even discussing

an epic poem that I am writing
about a water particle,

the epic heroic journey of a water particle
pulled away from the oneness of the sea,

metamorphosed thru many landforms
and beings, what a journey!  Fumbling home.

This poem has beat in my heart
for many years, for many years. And now

I have started writing, it is ready to take form.
Why am I now ready for its light and life?

You are helping me write the love story.
